SAN FRANCISCO, January 24, (THEWILL) – Last weekend’s Boko Haram attack on the Alau Ngawo Fate general areas in Borno State has led to a major humanitarian crisis with over 500 displaced residents from the adjoining communities fleeing for dear lives, seeking refuge at a Federal Government building in the area.
Alleging that they were chased from the surrounding villages, the displaced persons said they were left with no other option than to sleep in the open at the uncompleted building of the Federal Training Centre, Maiduguri.
Narrating their ordeal in an encounter with the representative of the Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan, the displaced persons said they have found it difficult to feed after they fled their settlement and seems rejected by the society.
Lawan, who brought relief materials to the displaced, however promised that adequate security is now in place and their settlements now safe for them to return home .
He informed them that the headmaster of a primary in the are has been directed to accommodate them in the school’s classrooms until the following morning when they can return to their homes.
“It is very unfortunate and shocking that you have been attacked and threatened by suspected Boko Haram gunmen who displaced all of you here at this Federal Training Centre, because of insurgents’ recent attacks and killings that occurred in most of your communities and villages in Alau Ngawo Fate general areas. Our governor, Alhaji Kashim Shetimma , has directed me to distribute these relief materials that included, 200 bags and cartons each of rice, mattresses, 2, 000 blankets and 2,000 plastic mats, 100 jerry cans of vegetable oil and 100 cartons Maggie cubes.
“All the materials are to be shared equitably without discriminating against any victim. The Dalori Estate Primary premises would be made available for you to pass the night today, before you depart to your respective communities and village. The sum of N1 million has also been donated by the governor for your transportation and other stipends,” he said.
Lawan assured that the fight against Boko Haram in the state is a “collective action” as he urged them to provide useful information to the military and other security agencies on the ‘modus operandi and hideouts’ of insurgents .
