SAN FRANCISCO, August 17, (THEWILL) – Facilities at the various camps for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, have been overstretched by the growing influx of displaced persons into the town.
The development is as a result of the lingering Boko Haram insurgency with almost half of the state believed to be under the control of the terrorists forcing many to flee to Maiduguri where they are currently seeking refuge .
Local sources said almost every infrastructure in the town has been overstretched with many of the IDPs even occupying schools where students have sent on compulsory holiday since over five months ago.
Barrister Zanna Mustapha is the proprietor of the Future Prowess Islamic Foundation, a school for orphans and vulnerable children in Maiduguri.
He said the facilities at his school have been over- stretched and can no longer accommodate more orphans.
Mustapha stated this Saturday at the graduation and price giving ceremony of the school in Maiduguri.
“We have over 2,000 orphans on our waiting list but we could not admit them now because our facilities cannot cope with the numbers. I am appealing to Gordon Brown Foundation and other organisations to assist us,” he said.
Mustapha said since the school was established, eight years ago 189 students have graduated and are now in unity schools in the northern states.
“I established the school to give supporting services to orphans and vulnerable children and Aliamudulilahi since we came on board eight years ago, more than 189 students have graduated into unity secondary schools in northern states,” he said.
He appealed to well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to come and help the school to enable it accommodate the increasing number of orphans and vulnerable children in the state.
