SAN FRANCISCO, February 02, (THEWILL) – Despite the heavy casualties suffered by Boko Haram insurgents in their renewed bid to overrun Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Sunday morning , the unrepentant insurgents, in the evening, suffered another loss in the battle for Tungushe.
Local sources said just barely 12 hours after they were routed in their bid to overrun Maiduguri, the insurgents regrouped in the evening to launch an attack on the strategic village of Tungushe in Konduga local government area of the state but were roundly defeated.
According to local residents at the village which has a strong military presence because it is just the last point before entrance into Maiduguri, the insurgents lost many of their fighters as the soldiers stationed at the village, numbering about 1, 000 dealt a devastating blow on the Boko Haram fighters with the assistance of a company of the Civilian JTF.
Giving a graphic detail of the battle for Tungushe, a local vigilante member, Ibrahim, said: “The insurgents came at about 5pm on Sunday and engaged the military in a gun battle, throwing explosives and Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) but were successfully repelled by the soldiers resulting into the death of hundreds of the terrorists.
“A lot of insurgents’ corpses littered the streets and bushes of the village, as they were seriously dealt with.”
Corroborating this account, military sources, craving anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying “our men seriously dealt with the insurgents as over 100 of them were killed.”
