BEVERLY HILLS, CA, October 21, (THEWILL) – A fresh Boko Haram attack in Borno State on Sunday has claimed the lives of 10 persons, including three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force in Kawuri village, which was also set ablaze by the insurgents.
Kawuri village is situated along the Maiduguri- Bama federal highway about 60 kilometres from Maiduguri.
It is also situated about 20 kilometres from Bama, a town which has not yet recovered from Boko Haram onslaught which saw many policemen, prison wardens and soldiers killed by the insurgents.
Narrating her experience in Maiduguri on Monday, Madam Hauwa Musa from Mubi in Adamawa State told THEWILL she had to pass through Bama and Kawuri, said she was among the early passengers from Mubi to Maiduguri a day after the attack in Kawuri and saw the destruction of the village.
“Yes I was among the passengers that boarded a taxi from Mubi to Maiduguri, and when we reached the village along the main road, we saw some buildings being consumed by fire with the presence of security operatives and men of the vigilante youth popularly addressed as civilian JTF in the village not quite long after the attackers have fled into the bush,” she said.
She disclosed that the gunmen also set ablaze some residential houses and public buildings such as clinic and a primary school.
Though details of the attack remained sketchy when filing this report, unofficial sources said the terrorists numbering about 30 arrived the village in two Toyota Hilux vehicles and motorcycles with heavily armed with sophisticated guns, rocket propelled launchers and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the early hours of Sunday.
They were said to have instructed residents to come out from their houses into the open before they opened fire on them, and later threw explosives (petrol bombs) on some private and public buildings.
The three vigilante members killed were said to have pursued the terrorists into the bush of Fori village but were killed in the process.
The deadly attack is coming on the heels of a similar one in Logomani, a Nigerian border village with Cameroon in the Gamboru/Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State where 20 persons were reportedly killed.
The interim spokesman of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Captain Aliyu Danja, and the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Gideon Jubrin, could not be reached for comments due to the shutdown of telephone services in the area.
