June 14, (THEWILL) — Brazil and Morocco shared the points after an entertaining 1-1 draw in their opening Group C encounter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium on Saturday night.
The eagerly awaited contest between two of the tournament’s strongest sides lived up to expectations as both teams delivered a high-quality display before a capacity crowd.
Morocco struck first in the 21st minute through Ismael Saibari. The midfielder latched onto a defence-splitting pass from Brahim Diaz after a turnover in midfield and calmly lifted the ball over Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker to hand the Atlas Lions an early advantage.
Brazil responded positively and found an equaliser 11 minutes later. Vinícius Júnior showcased his individual brilliance after receiving a pass from Bruno Guimarães on the left flank. The Real Madrid winger cut inside and unleashed a powerful right-footed strike that beat Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and flew into the net.
With the scores level at halftime, both teams returned determined to claim all three points.
Brazil enjoyed more of the ball and fashioned several opportunities in the second half, but Morocco remained a constant threat on the counterattack. The North Africans displayed the defensive discipline and organisation that have become hallmarks of their recent success on the international stage.
The closing stages produced moments of tension at both ends. Morocco came close to snatching victory in stoppage time when Neil El Aynaoui tested Alisson from distance. The Brazilian goalkeeper reacted sharply to deny the effort before quickly gathering the rebound from Ayoub Amaimouni to preserve the draw.
The result marked a notable milestone for Vinícius Júnior, whose goal was the first he had scored for Brazil in a match that did not end in victory. The previous eight games in which he found the net all resulted in wins for the South American giants.
Despite earning a point against one of Africa’s strongest teams, Vinícius admitted Brazil were below their best on the night.
“I believe we started off on a really bad note”, the forward said after the match.
The fixture was widely regarded as one of the standout ties of the opening round, with Brazil and Morocco the only two top-10-ranked nations paired against each other in the first set of group-stage matches.
The draw leaves both sides on one point in Group C. Brazil will next face Haiti as they seek their first win of the tournament, while Morocco prepare for a crucial clash against Scotland.
