April 21, (THEWILL) — Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea suffered a fifth consecutive English Premier League defeat on Tuesday, beaten 3-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion at the American Express Stadium in a result that lifted the Seagulls above the Blues into the top six.
Brighton took the lead inside three minutes. Former Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez tipped Kaoru Mitoma’s volley over the bar, and the resulting corner flicked off Jorrel Hato before falling to Ferdi Kadioglu, whose first-time effort deflected in off Wesley Fofana.
Sanchez was later rescued by Trevoh Chalobah’s goal-line clearance after careless distribution allowed Carlos Baleba to set up Jack Hinshelwood in front of an unguarded goal.
That let-off did not last. Hinshelwood remained onside to receive Georginio Rutter’s pass in the 56th minute and slotted past Sanchez at his near post, putting the hosts firmly in control.
Rosenior abandoned his 3-4-3 formation at the interval and Chelsea briefly improved, but Brighton continued pressing forward, with Mitoma and Kadioglu both going close.
Substitute Danny Welbeck completed the rout in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, stroking home Maxim De Cuyper’s cross to round off a thoroughly convincing performance.
Chelsea’s prospects of UCL football are now effectively over; they trail fifth-placed Liverpool by seven points with only 12 remaining.
Brighton, meanwhile, moves to sixth, two points above the Blues, and retains an outside chance of qualifying for European football’s premier club competition.
