November 07, (THEWILL) – A member of the British House of Commons, Mike Amesbury, has been charged with assault.
THEWILL earlier reported that the 55-year-old MP was suspended by the Labour Party for assaulting a 45-year-old man repeatedly on the street in Frodsham, Cheshire.
Amesbury has been a member of parliament (MP) since 2017 in Cheshire, northwest England, where the alleged incident took place. He was caught by CCTV on October 26, talking to a man before punching him in the face and then attempting to strike him again repeatedly to the ground in the street.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Amesbury has been summoned to appear in court to be formally charged with section 39, common assault.
The date and venue of his first appearance has not yet been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Amesbury confirmed he had been told to appear in court after the “deeply regrettable” incident.
In a statement earlier, the MP explained that he felt “threatened on the street following an evening out with friends. I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during the incident.”
