July 20, (THEWILL) — Buckingham Palace, on Monday, confirmed Andy Burnham as the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister after King Charles III formally invited the Labour leader to form a government, bringing Sir Keir Starmer’s premiership to an end and ushering in a new phase in British politics.
The constitutional transfer of power was completed after Starmer tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury during an audience with the King. Shortly afterwards, Burnham met the monarch at Buckingham Palace, where he was asked to form a new administration in line with Britain’s centuries-old constitutional convention.
In a statement announcing the transition, Buckingham Palace said: “Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept. Lady Starmer was also received by The King.”
The Palace subsequently confirmed that Burnham had accepted the King’s invitation to form a government, officially making him Britain’s new Prime Minister.
King Oversees Constitutional Handover
King Charles III travelled from his Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire to Buckingham Palace to preside over the constitutional handover of power.
With the Palace’s main ceremonial entrance closed for its annual summer opening to visitors, both the outgoing and incoming prime ministers entered through the discreet “luggage door” within the Palace quadrangle.
Burnham was welcomed by the King’s Principal Private Secretary, Sir Clive Alderton, and the King’s Equerry, Major Ben Rigby, before being escorted to the royal audience in the Chinese Dining Room, which is temporarily serving as the venue for official audiences while refurbishment work continues elsewhere in the Palace.
Following the audience, Starmer departed Buckingham Palace through a private exit alongside his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer, bringing his tenure in office to a formal close.
Burnham Pledges Stability and Renewal
In his first public remarks after taking office, Burnham pledged to restore stability to British politics and reassure both citizens and international partners that his government would provide steady leadership.
“Britain must show the world that stability can be regained once again,” he said.
The new Prime Minister also promised to rebuild public trust in government, stimulate economic growth, strengthen public services and pursue reforms aimed at delivering long-term national prosperity.
