President Muhammadu Buhari Monday met with the two former Senate Presidents, Senators David Mark and Ken Nnamani as well as a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari, behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Mark is still a serving senator under the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Nnamani is no longer in the senate. Mr. Masari is presently serving as Governor of Katsina State, the President’s home state.
THEWILL gathered from insiders that the meeting was called by the President as part of moves to douse the tension between the Presidency and the Senate leadership under Senators Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu, who are both being prosecuted for allegedly forging the Senate Standing Rule, to facilitate their election as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively. Both senators however continue to deny the charges.
Saraki is also standing trial for alleged wrongful declaration of his assets. He also denies the charges.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang, led the politicians to the meeting with the President.
THEWILL recalls that during a closed door session last week at the Senate, some aggrieved senators who are diehard supporters of Saraki had suggested that the Senate opened impeachment proceedings against President Buhari over his perceived bullying of the senate’s leadership.
