… Orders NOPAN To Change Name Within Two Weeks
SAN FRANCISCO, December 18, 2013, (THEWILL) – The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the body saddled with the responsibility to regulate the formation and management of companies in Nigeria, has ordered a group which claims to be representing online publishers, the Nigerian Online Publishers Association, to change its name and identity within two weeks or face sanctions.
The CAC directive followed a formal complaint to it by lawyers representing the Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN), which brought the attention of the agency to the mischief and deliberate attempt by the group to mislead and confuse the public by cloning its identity.
“… It is clear from the foregoing that the registration of your organization under the name Nigeria Online Publishers Association must have been done in error.
“In view of the foregoing, the Commission, pursuant to its powers under the act hereby directs you to change the name of your association to any available name… ,” the CAC said in a letter dated December 05, 2013.
The CAC letter sent to the infringing group’s registered address was returned to the commission as undeliverable thus further questioning the authenticity and intentions of the group.
The authentic OPAN was founded on November 14, 2011 by a group of passionate online publishers determined to sanitise and promote responsible journalism in the rapidly expanding world of online publishing.
Following the CAC’s directive to the infringing group, the lawyers of OPAN have sent a letter to the group drawing its attention to the CAC directive, and threatened to seek redress in court if the group ignores the CAC directive.
