March 19, (THEWILL) — The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has delivered a seismic blow to the sport on the continent by its decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and declare hosts Morocco the champions.
In a decision announced on Tuesday, CAF’s Appeal Board ruled that Senegal forfeited the January final in Rabat by walking off the pitch in protest during stoppage time.
The board applied Article 84 of the tournament regulations, recording the result as a 3-0 win for Morocco.
The final had seen Senegal triumph 1-0 in extra time after a chaotic climax. With the score level late in normal time, Morocco’s Brahim Díaz was awarded a controversial penalty following a VAR review.

Senegal’s football federation condemned the ruling as a “travesty” that “discredits African football” and confirmed it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) as soon as possible.
The Senegalese government went further, demanding an independent international investigation into alleged corruption within CAF.
Meanwhile, Morocco celebrated the outcome as adherence to the rules, with many supporters arguing that abandoning the pitch warranted severe consequences.
