January 25, (THEWILL) – The Democratic Republic of Congo booked their place in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday night, following a 0-0 draw with Tanzania, who remain without a win in the competition after nine matches.
In a cagey opening 45 minutes, chances were few and far between for both sides. Brentford forward Yoane Wissa went close for DR Congo with a mazy run which was well saved, while Tanzania captain Ally Samatta fired a presentable opportunity wide. At the interval, DR Congo, held a 1-point lead over Zambia in Group F courtesy of Morocco’s goal against Chipolopolo, putting qualification in sight.
The second half saw a marginal improvement for Tanzania in attack, but striker Simon Msuva was unable to capitalise on a promising opening inside the opposition box. Wissa almost snatched a late winner for DR Congo with a looping shot brilliantly tipped over by Tanzanian keeper Aishi Manula.
Ultimately a stalemate was enough to send DR Congo through in second place on three points. They will now face Group B runners-up Egypt in the last 16. Tanzania meanwhile remain rooted to the bottom of Group F without just one goal to show from their three matches.
