January 04, (THEWILL) — Cameroon have advanced to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals following a 2-1 victory over South Africa in Rabat.
The Indomitable Lions will now face Morocco in the last eight after goals from Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane proved sufficient to overcome Bafana Bafana.
South Africa began the encounter with promise. Relebohile Mofokeng missed a clear chance when through on goal against Devis Epassy after seven minutes, whilst Lyle Foster had an effort ruled out for offside during the opening exchanges.
Cameroon took the lead after 34 minutes through Tchamadeu, who converted after Carlos Baleba’s strike deflected off Samuel Kotto.
The goal required a VAR check before being confirmed. Two minutes into the second period, Kofane extended the advantage with a header from Aboubakar Nagida’s cross.
South Africa pressed for a route back into the contest. Samukelo Kabini saw a shot blocked at the far post, and Teboho Mokoena had a free-kick saved.
Their persistence yielded a goal two minutes from full time when substitute Evidence Makgopa fired home from Aubrey Modiba’s cross.
The late strike failed to alter the outcome. Cameroon withstood the closing pressure to confirm their progression and set up a quarter-final encounter with the tournament hosts.
