November 09, (THEWILL) – An independent investigation into Canada Soccer’s surveillance activities at the 2024 Paris Olympics has revealed significant organisational failures and oversight issues. The review examined an incident where Canadian staff members operated a drone during New Zealand’s training session.
The incident resulted in severe penalties for the Canadian women’s team, including a six-point deduction in the Olympic tournament. Additionally, FIFA imposed a one-year suspension on head coach, Bev Priestman, who previously led the team to victory at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Kevin Blue, Canada Soccer’s CEO and General Secretary, acknowledged the gravity of the findings, stating: “Our initial review of the conclusions of the independent investigator reveals that the drone incident in Paris was a symptom of a past pattern of an unacceptable culture and insufficient oversight within the national teams.”
Reports from Canadian media outlets suggest the surveillance practices might have extended beyond this single incident, potentially involving both senior national teams over several years. This revelation comes after Canada’s men’s team achieved World Cup qualification in 2022, their first appearance in the tournament since 1986.
Board Chair, Peter Augruso, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to reform, stating: “We know that more needs to be done and change takes time.” Canada Soccer plans to release comprehensive findings from the investigation within seven days, alongside detailed plans for addressing the identified issues.
