December 18, (THEWILL) — The Director General of the Bureau for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Benue State, Mr Shadrach Ukuma, has described carnival as a platform that will stimulate international dialogue, creativity and unity among youths in the state and country in general.
The Director General, who made the disclosure in Makurdi, explained the symbolism of the timing of the 2025 Benue Youths carnival was apt considering that the event involves exuberance and excess.
He said the kick-starting of the event, which coincided with the World Aids day, was to caution, care and work with the global community in the fight against AIDS.
According to Mr Ukuma, carnival is not merely a spectacle but a platform for behavioural change, using arts and culture to inspire safer choices and offer hope to those already living with the virus.
“Through cultural expression, we can reach people with messages of resilience, while warning others of the risks of reckless behaviour. Arts are a powerful way of communicating consequences and inspiring responsibility”, he said.
In his comment, Convener of the event, Hon. Terfa Akem, expressed gratitude to Governor Hyacinth Alia for restoring the festival after nearly eight years of inactivity.
While appreciating the Governor for reviving the Benue Cultural Carnival for 2025, Akem described it as a pledge fulfilled.
He assured residents that the 2025 edition would be different as it aims to highlight its dual role in celebrating Benue’s rich heritage and stimulating the local economy.
Akem listed advantages of the carnival event to include high patronage of Hotels, restaurants, market women and other businesses within Makurdi metropolis to witness an increase in bookings as visitors arrive from across Nigeria and beyond.
The carnival features a diverse lineup, including Children’s Kiddies Carnival, Talent Hunt for emerging performers, Carnival Queen Pageant, Benue Fashion Show, and Cultural Week of traditional performances.
Others include Street processions and carols, Musical concerts and DJ-led entertainment, and a grand Crossover Night to usher in the New Year 2026.
