Catalan Economist Claims Barcelona’s Financial Losses Higher Than Expected

October 11, (THEWILL) – Barcelona reportedly made financial losses of €330m during the 2022/2023 season, significantly higher than expectations according to Catalan economist, Marc Ciria. The club had announced a net profit of €304m in September.

Marc Ciria, a Catalan expert in wealth management and financial tax and a founding partner at Diagonal Asset Management, claimed Barcelona’s operating income was €795m, while expenses totalled €1.125bn. He highlighted “runaway spending” and said “ordinary losses were much higher than anticipated.”

Barcelona have faced infamous monetary issues in recent years, culminating in Lionel Messi’s high-profile departure in 2021 when his contract expired. The club signed multiple free transfers and loans this summer but still lacks funds for big transfers due to their financial constraints.

Club president, Joan Laporta, recently insisted Barcelona are “financially recovered sooner than expected” and predicted reduced losses for 2023/24. However, Ciria’s analysis casts doubt on the club’s outlook.

Barcelona are forecasting a revenue drop to €859m and profits of just €11m for next season. Their financial difficulties look set to continue despite Laporta’s optimism.
