April 01, (THEWILL) – As 2023 general elections approaches, the General Assembly of the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo on Friday, urged its faithfuls and Christians in the country to participate actively in politics, as this move will help in changing the fortune of the nation.
This is contained in a communique issued at the end of its 20th General Assembly, signed by Most Rev Dr Charles Hamawa, the Catholic Bishop and Very Rev Fr Eugene Batare in Jalingo.
The communique noted that the idea that politics was a dirty game should be an encouraging factor for Christians to join and change it for a better country, come 2023.
It also stated that the 23 years of the current democratic dispensation has failed to foster the desired peace and development to the people.
“The Assembly calls on the catholic faithfuls and Christians to actively participate in politics for the good of the nation.
“If the notion that politics is a dirty game is anything to go by, then, it should encourage Christians to participate in order to change it to a clean game for a better nation”, it stated.
The Christian community have, therefore, been called upon to be card carrying members of political parties of their choice, contest elections, vote at elections and follow all the processes to enable them change the narrative for good.
The assembly also enjoined Nigerians to eschew violence and support government and security agencies to tackle the growing insecurity to ensure rapid development.
It called on the Federal Government to redouble its efforts in ensuring an end to the frequent strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which it noted, was destroying the country’s future.
