October 25, (THEWILL) — Chelsea suffered a dramatic late defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, losing 2-1 to Sunderland and ending their four-match winning run in the English Premier League. The Blues dropped to seventh place in the table, whilst the visitors made a remarkable climb to second.
Alejandro Garnacho gave the hosts an ideal start in the fourth minute, scoring his first goal for the club with a well-taken finish from a tight angle during a rapid counter-attack. However, Wilson Isidor restored parity midway through the opening period, converting from close range after former Chelsea player Bertrand Traoré’s deflected shot caused confusion in the penalty area. The striker, who now has four league goals this campaign, troubled the home defence throughout and nearly added another before the interval.
Chelsea dominated possession for long spells but struggled to break down Sunderland’s disciplined five-man backline. Manager Enzo Maresca introduced Brazilian forward Estêvão from the bench in an attempt to inject fresh impetus, and the youngster almost made an immediate impact only to be denied by an excellent block from Lutsharel Geertruida. Goalkeeper Roefs also produced important saves to keep his side level, turning away efforts from Garnacho and Trevoh Chalobah.
Sunderland grew in confidence during the closing stages and claimed all three points deep into stoppage time. Substitute Chemsdine Talbi curled a superb effort beyond Robert Sánchez in the 93rd minute after Brian Brobbey held the ball up expertly on the counter-attack to tee up the Moroccan on the edge of the box.
The defeat is a significant setback for Chelsea’s climb up the standings, whilst the Black Cats continue their impressive return to the top flight with a memorable victory in west London.
