September 01, (THEWILL) — Raheem Sterling will remain at Chelsea after the club failed to find a suitable destination for the England international before Monday’s transfer deadline. The 30-year-old winger has been actively marketed for both permanent and loan moves throughout the summer window but no acceptable offers materialised.
Sterling has been training separately from Enzo Maresca’s first-team group since being informed he does not feature in the manager’s plans for the upcoming season. Despite maintaining his fitness through intensive physical preparation, the former Manchester City player found himself without viable options as the deadline approached.
The winger’s substantial wages present a significant obstacle to any potential move, with Sterling earning over £300,000 per week on a contract that runs until 2026. His status as Chelsea’s highest-paid player has complicated negotiations with interested clubs, though several enquiries were made during recent months.
While European transfer windows have now closed, Sterling could still move to certain leagues where deadlines remain open. Turkish clubs have until September 12 to complete signings, and Saudi Arabian teams can continue making acquisitions until September 23, though Sterling has shown no interest in moves to these destinations or Major League Soccer.
Sterling joined Chelsea for £47.5 million in 2022 following the Boehly-Clearlake takeover, scoring 19 goals across two seasons before spending last year on loan at Arsenal. His 28 appearances for the Gunners failed to convince Chelsea management to reintegrate him into their squad under new head coach Maresca.
