January 20, (THEWILL) – Akwa Ibom State has confirmed a cholera outbreak in Emeroke community, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area, with symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting reportedly claiming several lives.
Health officials are currently assessing secondary health facilities in the state to ascertain the number of cases linked to the outbreak.
In a statement, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Patrick Essiet, disclosed that the State Epidemiologist has been deployed to the affected community to launch enlightenment campaigns aimed at mitigating the spread of the disease.
“The Ministry of Health advises members of the community and surrounding areas to adopt preventive measures.
Proper handwashing, especially after defecation, and boiling drinking water before consumption are critical.
Additionally, anyone experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting should seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility,” Dr. Essiet stated.
He also urged community leaders to strictly enforce the state government’s ban on open defecation to curb further contamination of water sources.
“While the state government is working on a long-term solution to address the outbreak, the Ministry is mobilizing essential supplies to the affected community as a short-term intervention,” he added.
Residents have been advised to report all suspected cholera cases to the State Ministry of Health’s Director of Public Health for prompt action.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the health and safety of citizens while emphasising the importance of collaboration with local communities to prevent further fatalities.
