May 13, (THEWILL) – Nigerian international, Samuel Chukwueze, is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury during AC Milan’s Serie A clash with Cagliari on Saturday. The 24-year-old winger was withdrawn at halftime of the match at the San Siro, being replaced by Rafael Leao.
Scans have revealed that Chukwueze sustained a first-degree lesion of the biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh. The injury now puts his involvement in Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin next month in doubt.
It caps a disappointing first season in Italy for the former Villarreal player. Chukwueze has started just 15 of Milan’s 33 matches across all competitions, scoring 3 goals and providing 3 assists – the lowest goal contributions of his professional career so far.
The hamstring issue could potentially be Chukwueze’s final appearance under current Milan boss Stefano Pioli. The Italian is expected to depart the club at the end of the season following the Rossoneri’s poor campaign this term.
Chukwueze’s setback is an untimely blow with the winger recently starting to show the form that persuaded Milan to sign him from Villarreal last summer for a reported €20 million fee.
