June 19, (THEWILL) – Yassine Bounou’s stoppage-time penalty save prevented Real Madrid from claiming victory against Al Hilal in their FIFA Club World Cup Group H opener at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Saudi Arabian side earned a well-deserved 1-1 draw, ending Real Madrid’s previously perfect record against Saudi opposition and delivering a statement performance in front of a packed crowd in Florida.
The match saw significant debuts for both clubs, with Xabi Alonso taking charge of Real Madrid for the first time whilst Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold made their maiden appearances in the famous white shirt.
Al Hilal began under new management too, with former Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi overseeing his first competitive fixture.

The lead lasted just minutes before Al Hilal earned a penalty when Raul Asencio fouled Marcos Leonardo, allowing Neves to equalise from the spot before half-time.
The second period saw Real Madrid increase their tempo, with substitute Arda Guler striking the crossbar shortly after his introduction whilst Vinicius Junior continued to threaten down the left flank.
Al Hilal defended resolutely throughout, maintaining their defensive structure whilst looking dangerous on the counter-attack.
The match appeared destined for a draw until referee Facundo Tello awarded Real Madrid a penalty following a lengthy VAR review, penalising Mohammed Al Qahtani for handball against Fran Garcia.
Federico Valverde stepped up to take what seemed like the winning penalty, but Bounou produced a magnificent save to preserve the point for Al Hilal.
The result is a significant achievement for the Saudi Pro League champions, who demonstrated they belong on football’s biggest stage whilst Real Madrid will rue missed opportunities in their quest to retain claim the Club World Cup title under their new management structure.
