July 17, (THEWILL) — Coca-Cola is set to replace high-fructose corn syrup with real cane sugar in its United States drinks.
US president, Donald Trump, who announced this on Wednesday, said the move will make the drinks “just better.”
Writing in a post on his Truth Social, President Trump thanked Coca-Cola leaders, declaring it a “very good move”.
“I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so. I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!” the post read.
Trump’s announcement comes as his Health Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., continues pushing for the food industry to eliminate controversial ingredients through the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative.
The movement has called for the removal of high fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes, and seed oils from processed foods, citing concerns over links to chronic health conditions such as obesity and heart disease.
Although Coca-Cola has yet to comment publicly, but the CEO, James Quincey, previously confirmed efforts to reduce sugar and reformulate recipes globally,
“We continue to make progress on sugar reduction in our beverages. We’ve done this by changing recipes as well as by using our global marketing resources and distribution network to boost awareness of and interest in our ever-expanding portfolio”, Quincey told investors in April.
Cane sugar is already standard in Coca-Cola drinks sold in countries like Mexico and the UK.
