BEVERLY HILLS, April 20, (THEWILL) –Â The Queen of England has appealed to Commonwealth leaders to appoint her son, Prince Charles, to succeed her as their head.
She made this known on Thursday as she opened the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London saying it was her “sincere wish” that Prince Charles takes over “one day”.
Addressing the gathering of dignitaries, royals and the prime minister, the Queen said it was a “pleasure, this time, to welcome you to my home for the biennial meeting.
“It remains a great pleasure and honour to serve you and to observe with pride and satisfaction that this is a flourishing network.
“It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations, and will decide that one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949.”
There had been some suggestions that the position should be rotated around member states as the role is not hereditary and will not pass automatically to the Prince of Wales on the Queen’s death and is entirely up to the Commonwealth heads of government.
However, the statement by the Queen is the culmination of a concerted operation by the British government and royal establishment to present this decision as a fait accompli against which it would be almost impossible to argue.
So, barring unforeseen objections, the Prince of Wales looks likely to succeed the Queen as head of the Commonwealth.
