July 07, (THEWILL) – A federal high court in Abuja has disqualified Sheriff Oborevwori, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 governorship election in Delta State.
The court ruled in favour of Olorogun David Edevbie, a former PDP gubernatorial aspirant, who challenged the emergence of Oborevwori, as the Delta State PDP flag bearer.
Oborevwori, an anointed candidate of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, had won the PDP governorship primary, held on 25th May, 2022.
He had polled 615 votes to defeat David Edevbie (anointed candidate of former Governor James Ibori), who secured 113 votes.
However, Edevbie in a suit filed at the federal high court, contended that the PDP violated its constitution in the process of the state congress, which produced Oborevwori.
Edevbie in the suit prayed that the court restrain the PDP from forwarding Oborevwori’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and also restrain INEC from receiving or recognising Oborevwori as the duly nominated party’s flag bearer.
The suit also sought to restrain Oborevwori from parading himself as the governorship candidate of the PDP for the election.
Ruling on the suit on Thursday, Presiding Justice Taiwo Taiwo, disqualified Oborevwori over discrepancies in his certificates.
