November 04, (THEWILL) — The Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has granted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) approval to proceed with its elective National Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba.
Delivering judgment on Tuesday in Suit No. I/1336/2025 filed by Folahan Malamo Adelabi, an aspirant for the position of Deputy National Organising Secretary, Justice A. L. Akintola upheld the PDP’s right to conduct its internal affairs and elect national officers in line with its constitution and established timetable.
Justice Akintola ruled that the party must not be denied its constitutional freedom to assemble, organise, and direct its activities, stressing that political parties are the backbone of democracy and must be allowed to function without undue interference.
The court specifically restrained the PDP, its officers, and agents from taking any action capable of frustrating or derailing the approved electoral schedule or convention process.
In addition, the judge directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deploy officials to monitor and observe the two-day convention to ensure compliance with electoral standards and to enhance public confidence in the party’s democratic processes.
Justice Akintola also affirmed the mandate of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, as Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC), directing him to continue preparations without obstruction.
The judge said INEC’s presence at the convention would “strengthen transparency, promote accountability, and safeguard internal democracy within the party.”
THEWILL recalls that Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had on Friday halted the planned convention following a suit filed by Austine Nwachukwu (Imo State PDP Chairman), Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia State Chairman), and Turnah George (South-South Factional Secretary).
Reacting to Tuesday’s ruling, a senior PDP chieftain described the judgment as “a firm affirmation that democratic values and internal party processes must be respected,” adding that the decision “paves the way for the party’s reorganisation ahead of future elections.”
