SAN FRANCISCO, July 06, (THEWILL) – Cristiano Ronaldo was the star of the show as Portugal beat Wales in the Euro 2016 semi-final on Wednesday night.
The Real Madrid man scored one and grabbed an assist to end the Welsh dream after a shock run to the last four of the tournament.
After a drab goalless first half, devoid of any clear chances or attacking excitement, the second half saw Portugal turn on the style and run out comfortable 2-0 winners.
So what changed at half-time?
Was it an inspired tactical switch? Was it a brilliant motivational team talk in the Portuguese dressing room?
No… it was Cristiano Ronaldo’s shirt. Yes, Ronaldo changed his shirt at half time.
The Portugal captain switching from a long-sleeved to a short-sleeved top might seem to be insignificant. But stop to think about.
During the opening 45 minutes, a fully covered Ronaldo was frustrated, caged, stifled, slow and contained.
During the second half – after he freed up his arms, Ronaldo was unstoppable, fired up, blazing, on top of his game, assist providing and record breaking goal scorer!
Ronaldo is now the first player with three or more goals in two EURO tournaments (2012 & 2016).
In scoring he also equalled Michel Platini’s tally of nine goals at European Championships.
Ronaldo, with his strikes against Hungary became the first player to score in four different European Championships, having previously found the net in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
He also overtook Nuno Gomes as the highest Euros goal scorer in Portuguese history.
Ronaldo has played more games at the Championships than any other player, setting the record with his 17th match against Hungary. The clash against Wales was his 20th outing.
Ronaldo clearly plays a lot better with his forearms exposed, perhaps, he should play without his shirt someday… or play naked!
Please ladies, stop imagining things, which can never happen!
