January 04, (THEWILL) — Manchester United salvaged a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road, missing an opportunity to climb into the English Premier League’s top four.
Matheus Cunha’s second-half strike cancelled out Brenden Aaronson’s opener for the hosts.
Ruben Amorim’s visitors thought they had taken an early lead when Cunha found the net from Casemiro’s header, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Leeds came closest before the interval when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s diving header struck the far post.
Daniel Farke’s side made a strong start to the second period and took the lead in the 62nd minute.
Aaronson finished calmly into the bottom-right corner after Pascal Struijk threaded a ball through the United defence.
The visiting manager responded immediately by introducing Joshua Zirkzee, and the substitute made an immediate impact.
Zirkzee delivered a low pass into the penalty area, allowing Cunha to slide in and guide the ball beyond Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perri.
Both teams pressed for a winner in the final stages.
Noah Okafor and Joel Piroe went close for the home side, whilst Cunha hit the base of the post nine minutes from time, but neither team could break the deadlock and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
