May 27, (THEWILL) – On Thursday, the Golden State Warriors clinched a return to the NBA Finals by defeating the Dallas Mavericks in Game 5.
With the victory, Warriors top player, Stephen Curry, became the first ever winner of the Magic Johnson Western Conference Finals MVP award after clinching the conference title.
Curry led the Warriors to a 4-1 series triumph over Dallas, averaging 23.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 6.6 rebounds per game. The 34-year-old was not nearly as dominant in the Western Conference Finals as he has been in previous years
Yet, the irony is that even as a less productive version of himself, Steph remained the top player on a Conference Champion team, which is a testament to his ability.
Curry was quick to point out, though, that the team’s ultimate goal of winning a championship is still four wins away. They will have about a week to recover before returning to the court for Game 1 of the NBA Finals after defeating the Mavericks in four of five games.
