November 05, (THEWILL) – Eligible voters in the United States of America, USA, will go to the polls on Tuesday, November 5, to elect the 47th president of the country.
The outcome of the election is significant, majorly on how Joe Biden’s successor will handle the ongoing hostilities in the middle East, as well as the Russian-Ukraine confrontation. Pertinent for Africa, is the capacity of the next President to undo the significant influence of China in the continent.
It is the 60th presidential election in the US with about 230 million eligible voters, but only about 160 million of registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in the neck-and-neck race between Democrat’s Presidential candidate, vice president Kalama Harris and Republican candidate, former President, Donald Trump. More than 78 million Americans cast votes early by mail-in ballot or in-person before election day.
While Trump is expected to watch results come in from his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida; Harris is expected to be at Howard University, her alma mater, in Washington.
Although popular vote is not a deciding factor of who occupies the White House, but the Electoral College. There have been instances when a candidate got more popular votes, but lost out on the electoral college.
The Electoral College, however, decides who will be elected president and vice president of the US and is a process which includes selection of electors; meeting of electors who cast votes for the president and vice president; and counting of the electors’ votes by the Congress.
There are a total of 538 electoral votes. A candidate needs the vote of at least 270 electors—more than half of all electors—to win the presidential election.
