BEVERLY HILLS, January 25, (THEWILL) – John Oyegun, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has declared that the party can withstand any plot from defectors joining the party.

Oyegun, who stated this at an interactive session with journalists at the APC headquarters in Abuja, spoke on several important issues including the fight against corruption, the economy, Kogi state deputy governorship, the party’s Anambra Central Senatorial candidacy and party funding.

“The essential fabric of APC is strong enough to withstand any attempt by anyone to undermine it from within,” he said.

“When you join the party today, you do not expect to take over reign of power because there are people there already, you still have to prove yourself that you’re loyal and reliable member of the party.”

On finance, he acknowledged that the party was suffering from “strains of funding”, confirming reports by THEWILL.

“The party is suffering the strains of funding,” he said. “We are working to raise resources within the membership.”

On the anti-corruption campaign of the Buhari administration, the APC national chairman said that the government was not selective in its fight, but added that the probing of the immediate past PDP administration was necessary because the erstwhile ruling party held Nigeria down for 16 years.

“PDP was in control, are you going to come and arrest me in Benin over contract issues when I was not in any way near government?
“We are investigating yesterday. Let tomorrow investigate us,” he said.

Oyegun also commented on the general state of the nation, lamenting that the present government inherited a prostrate economy.

“Buhari inherited a collapsed economy. What we are doing is to clear the debris,” he said. “There will be plenty of good news in the next few months. We have to put up with the present deprivation. But we will smile tomorrow.”
