April 02, (THEWILL) — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Diaspora Chapter in the United States has called for strict adherence to the rule of law and due process following the removal of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by David Mark, from the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
THEWILL reports that INEC had announced plans to delist the Mark-led NWC and suspend dealings with all factions of the party pending the determination of a substantive suit before the Federal High Court, Abuja.
A statement signed on Wednesday by its Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, said the decision followed a review of relevant court rulings, including a directive to maintain the status quo in the leadership dispute within the ADC.
Haruna noted that the commission’s action was in compliance with the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Appeal No. CA/ABJ/145/2026: Senator Mark v. Nafiu Bala Gombe & Ors., as well as the pending case before the Federal High Court.
He further disclosed that INEC had received separate correspondences dated March 16 from two law firms representing different interests within the party, necessitating a cautious and neutral stance.
Reacting in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Safiyanu Ali (Maibiyar), and Secretary, Adeolu Balogun, the ADC Diaspora Chapter expressed concern that the development could impact party administration, even as it acknowledged that the matter remains subject to ongoing litigation before competent courts.
According to the group, while INEC’s action may be rooted in legal considerations, steps taken during the pendency of a dispute must reflect transparency, fairness, and institutional independence.
It stressed that “actions taken during a legal dispute may raise concerns about due process and institutional independence,” adding that “transparency and adherence to established procedures” remain critical in managing party affairs.
In a broader appeal, the group urged national leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Aliyu Gusau to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and fostering national cohesion.
The chapter also called on the National Assembly to sustain its constitutional oversight functions, noting that robust legislative engagement is essential to deepening democratic governance.
Furthermore, it encouraged Nigerians to remain law-abiding and actively engaged in the democratic process, emphasising that citizen participation is vital to the consolidation of democracy.
The group extended its appeal to the international community, including the United Nations, to continue observing developments in Nigeria’s democratic space.
It reiterated its commitment to exploring all lawful avenues to address concerns surrounding party leadership and institutional processes, expressing optimism that the judiciary would ultimately provide clarity and reinforce the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic system.
