April 02, (THEWILL) — The Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), Dr. Umaru Kwairanga, has urged business leaders to place integrity and accountability at the forefront of their operations, describing both as essential to Nigeria’s economic transformation.
He made this call on Tuesday during the launch of the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) 2026 Corporate Governance Outlook, where he emphasized the growing importance of governance in shaping resilient institutions and sustainable markets.
Dr. Kwairanga noted that corporate governance has evolved beyond mere regulatory compliance, becoming a strategic tool for long-term value creation and innovation.
According to him, organizations that embed sound governance practices into their corporate culture are better positioned to withstand economic shocks and navigate uncertainties.
Describing governance as a “strategic enabler,” he stressed that it plays a critical role in strengthening institutional stability and fostering investor confidence.
He added that trust in Nigeria’s capital market is closely linked to the governance standards upheld by listed companies.
The NGX chairman further highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among key stakeholders, including regulators, market operators, professional bodies, and corporate leaders.
Such cooperation, he said, is vital to deepening market integrity and ensuring that governance frameworks remain robust and effective.
“Regulators, operators, professional bodies, and corporate leaders must continue to work together to deepen market integrity and build institutions that can withstand shocks,” he said.
Dr. Kwairanga concluded that prioritizing corporate governance would not only enhance transparency but also support sustainable economic growth across Nigeria.
