January 22, (THEWILL) – The Trump administration has officially lifted a decades-old policy that restricted immigration arrests at sensitive locations such as schools, churches, and hospitals.
Under the previous policy, these areas were deemed “protected” locations where enforcement actions could only occur in cases of immediate public danger.
However, Acting Homeland Security Secretary, Benjamin Huffman, announced the end of the policy in a statement released on Monday.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security stated that the decision aims to strengthen immigration law enforcement and apprehend individuals who entered the United States illegally.
The department emphasised that agents will be expected to exercise “common sense” while carrying out their duties.
“Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest. The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense,” the statement read.
The policy shift has sparked concerns among immigrant rights advocates, who warn of potential negative consequences for immigrant families.
They argue that the new directive could exacerbate fears among parents, leading to increased absenteeism among children in immigrant households.
“There is a real risk that children will miss school because parents are afraid to drive them or walk them to the gates,” an advocate noted.
The announcement represents a significant shift in immigration enforcement strategy under the Trump administration, further intensifying debates around the treatment of undocumented immigrants in the United States.
