February 25, (THEWILL) – Galatasaray Football Club has initiated formal proceedings against Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho following controversial remarks made after the Istanbul derby ended in a goalless draw on Monday. The Turkish league leaders have accused the 62-year-old Portuguese coach of making racist statements during his post-match comments.
The dispute centres on Mourinho’s characterisation of the Galatasaray bench, whom he described as “jumping like monkeys at every decision” while praising referee Slavko Vincic for maintaining control in what he termed a “jungle environment.” These comments prompted Galatasaray to announce plans for criminal proceedings alongside official complaints to both UEFA and FIFA.
In their official statement, Galatasaray claimed that Mourinho has made “derogatory statements against the Turkish people” since beginning his coaching career in Turkey. The club further indicated they would monitor Fenerbahce’s response to their coach’s behaviour, questioning whether the club would uphold its self-proclaimed “exemplary moral values.”
Mourinho had specifically thanked the foreign referee for his performance, suggesting that had a Turkish official been in charge, Fenerbahce defender Yusuf Akcicek would have received an early yellow card necessitating a substitution. The comments came amid growing tension between the rival clubs in their championship battle.
The incident occurs against the backdrop of a tightly contested Turkish league campaign, with Galatasaray currently holding a six-point advantage over second-placed Fenerbahce. With 12 matches remaining in the season, the controversy adds another dimension to what was already an intense title race in Turkish football.
