September 10, (THEWILL) – The German Football Association (DFB) has announced the dismissal of Hansi Flick as manager of the national men’s team after Germany’s shock 4-1 defeat to Japan in Saturday’s international friendly match at the Volkswagen Arena.
Supporters jeered the hosts at full-time, leading to crisis talks between Flick and DFB Chiefs on Sunday. A statement from DFB President, Bernd Neuendorf, confirmed Flick’s departure, saying: “The committees agreed that the senior men’s national team needs a new impetus after the recent disappointing results.”
Flick’s assistant coaches, Marcus Sorg and Danny Rohl, have also left their roles with immediate effect. The DFB aims to appoint a replacement as soon as possible, with Rudi Völler, Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner taking interim charge for Tuesday’s UEFA Nations League match against France.
Flick was appointed Germany manager in August 2021, replacing Joachim Löw after Euro 2021. Despite winning the treble with Bayern Munich in the 2019/2020 campaign, he has struggled to inspire a turnaround in Germany’s fortunes.
Saturday’s heavy defeat capped a dire 16-match run containing just four wins for Die Mannschaft. Their early World Cup exit and string of poor results made Flick’s position untenable.
