SAN FRANCISCO, March 27, (THEWILL) -The Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, Kaduna state, Prof. Ibrahim Garba on Monday disclosed that the Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, graduated from the Institution in the year 2000.
Speaking while fielding questions from the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, he stated that Melaye graduated from ABU with a third class degree in Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Geography.
The Vice Chancellor explained that Melaye was a student of ABU with the name Jonah Daniel Melaye.
Garba who had sat in room 120 where the hearing took place was excused out at 1.21 before Melaye spoke.
He later came in at 1.40pm, swore to an oath at 1.41pm, after which he was asked questions on whether Melaye graduated from the institution. He responded thus: “From the records, distinguished senator Dino Melaye graduated as Daniel Jonah Melaye during the 3rd semester with a 3rd class degree.”
The Committee had last Thursday written and summoned the ABU Vice Chancellor to appear before it today to explain his side of the story regarding the allegation that Dino, an APC senator, did not graduate from the institution.
The Senator representing Borno south, Ali Ndume, who moved the motion for Melaye to be investigated, was also at the hearing.
He said he called the attention of the upper chamber to the issue because the integrity of the senate was on the line.
The former Senate Leader said he was satisfied with the fact that there were records to show that Melaye graduated from the university.
When asked even if he verified the allegations before raising it on the floor of the Senate, he said: “I didn’t do any due deligence because it is not my responsibility”.
Ndume however stated that anything that bordered on the integrity of the senate should not be ignored.
