SAN FRANCISCO, March 27, (THEWILL) – President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on Monday appeared before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to defend himself with regard to his alleged ownership of an SUV seized by the Nigeria Customs Services, NCS.
Customs officials had impounded the bulletproof sports utility vehicle in January after discovering that the documents used in clearing it were forged.
Recently, there have been allegations that the row of the Senate with the Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali, is as a result of the action of the agency.
But speaking when he appeared before the Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led panel, the Senate President said, “I didn’t import any Range Rover,” adding that: “I am not an importer”.
“I know nothing about the agent or any clearing company. It is important that I clear my name. The documents are there and none of the documents are in my name,” he added.
Recall that the Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, had in a motion moved last Tuesday, called on his colleagues to investigate Saraki over an allegation levelled against the third citizen.
He said, “This matter that borders on our privileges came up. One has to do with the distinguished senator Bukola Saraki, the senate president and it was reported in a paper I have it here with your permission I will want to after making presentation lay it down that: ‘Senate on vengeance after Nigeria Customs seized senator Saraki’s bullet proof Range Rover over fake documents’.
“My colleagues, that are following events particularly online have seen, heard or read the rain of abuses on this Senate and the misconception of the fact that we invited the customs CG based on a very unpopular policy that affects the people we represent but now we are faced with this and the president has been found in this National Assembly.”
