March 30, (THEWILL) – Novak Djokovic is set to return to the US Open after a two-year absence following the American Senate’s decision to lift COVID-19 restrictions for international visitors.
The Serbian, who has not received a vaccine against coronavirus, missed out on competing at the final major of the year in 2022 after losing to Daniil Medvedev in the final in 2021.
In an interview earlier this month, Djokovic expressed his eagerness to return to Flushing Meadows and reconnect with the New York crowd. “I received a lot of love and appreciation from people and I want to go back and I want to reconnect with the crowd there. So, that’s something I’m looking forward to and hopefully, it will happen,” he said.
Djokovic is expected to make his comeback at the Monte Carlo Masters, which starts on April 9, as the European clay-court season kicks off. The Serbian has not played this month due to the vaccine restrictions at the two Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami.
With the US Senate’s decision to end the COVID-19 public health emergency, Djokovic will now be able to compete at the US Open and pursue his quest for a calendar Grand Slam.
