January 31, (THEWILL) – Matt Doherty is close to joining Atletico Madrid on loan for the rest of the season from Tottenham Hotspur.
The Irishman is set to leave Spurs for a standard loan deal, which will be confirmed by Atletico Madrid once centre-back Felipe moves to Nottingham Forest.
The move comes as part of Tottenham’s plan to free up space for Pedro Porro, who is expected to join from Sporting CP on deadline day.
Tottenham’s right-sided options have been a focus of transfer activity this month, with Djed Spence finalising a six-month loan to Rennes and Rick Karsdorp, the want-away Roma right-back, also on Atletico’s radar. However, the La Liga giants opted for Doherty instead.
Emerson Royal was linked with a move from Spurs to Atletico this month, but it appears that he will remain as a squad option. Doherty will join fellow Tottenham loanee Sergio Reguilon at the Estadio Metropolitano, both of whom signed for Spurs in the summer of 2020 under Jose Mourinho.
