November 12, (THEWILL) — The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a six-count charge against Innocent Onukwume, a 27-year-old man from Oyigbo Local Government Area, Rivers State, for allegedly advocating a military coup in Nigeria.
The charges were filed on Tuesday, November 11, at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Onukwume is accused of using his verified X account (@theagroman) in October 2025 to promote subversive activities intended to disturb public peace.
According to the DSS, Onukwume posted: “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
The agency said the post was designed to incite fear, anxiety, and unrest among Nigerians.
The DSS emphasized that the alleged actions violate the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended), and constitute a threat to national security and public order.
Filed by DSS lawyer A. M. Danalami, the charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, includes counts related to cybercrime and the promotion of violence through social media.
In count one, Onukwume is specifically accused of posting the coup message with the intent to alarm Nigerians, an offense punishable under Section 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The DSS noted that the public nature of the post amplified its potential impact, making it accessible to a wide audience and easily misconstrued as a genuine call to action.
The agency warned that leaving such inflammatory content unchecked could destabilize national security.
The case is now before the Federal High Court as the security agency seeks to hold Onukwume accountable for his alleged actions.
