October 12, (THEWILL) – Following a scan that revealed that Argentina striker Paulo Dybala had sustained a thigh injury that might sideline him for up to six weeks, the AS Roma star is now in a race against time to return to fitness before the World Cup commences next month.
Dybala was charged with the responsibility of taking a penalty in Sunday’s 2-1 Serie A win over Lecce at the Stadio Olimpico, when he hurt himself and left the field with a limp. A scan on Wednesday revealed that he had injured a muscle in his left leg immediately jeopardising Dybala’s participation in the World Cup.
The injury is anticipated to keep him sidelined for up to 4-6 weeks of action even though Roma is hopeful that the 28-year-old can heal in time to play in Qatar for the Argentina team and return to continue the 2022/2023 campaign in Rome.
The first Group C match for Argentina is scheduled for November 22 against Saudi Arabia, just under six weeks after the scan. After a solid start to the season with his new club, Dybala, who has 34 international appearances to his name, is in a strong position to be chosen in Lionel Scaloni’s team for the year-ending competition.
The 28-year-old, who left Juventus at the conclusion of his contract and joined Roma on a free transfer last summer, has seven goals in 11 games across all competitions under Jose Mourinho. His absence will coincide with a hectic schedule of games leading up to the World Cup that includes clashes with top-of-the-table Napoli and city rivals Lazio, a massive blow for Roma.
