June 10 (THEWILL) — The Ebonyi State Government has commenced the full digitalisation of its land management system as part of efforts to eliminate land grabbing and enhance transparency in land administration across the state.
The Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Dr Mathew Edeagu Nwobasi, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital.
According to him, the ministry has begun the archiving of all land title documents into a digital database, noting that the initiative would strengthen land administration and prevent unauthorized alterations to land records.
He explained that upon completion of the exercise, no land document in the state would be tampered with without the knowledge and approval of the ministry.
Dr Nwobasi also revealed plans by the government to establish zonal Town Planning Authorities in the three senatorial districts of the state to effectively manage the growing pace of urbanisation.
The commissioner also said that the ministry had completed the enumeration of lands acquired for the dualisation of the Ngbo-Agbaja-Nwofe Road and assured affected property owners that compensation would be paid soon.
He further disclosed that compensation had already been paid to residents of Nsurakpa Ezzangbo whose lands were acquired about 25 years ago for the establishment of Ebonyi State University.
Speaking on land administration reforms, Dr Nwobasi said the ministry had significantly reduced boundary disputes and land title conflicts across the state through improved monitoring and intervention mechanisms.
He reiterated the government’s earlier directive to property owners in the Ngbabor Echara and Salt City Estates to develop their plots before the end of June 2026 or risk having the lands reallocated.
According to him, the measure is aimed at preventing the estates from becoming hideouts for criminal activities while promoting orderly development.
The commissioner also disclosed that the state government is in the process of acquiring land for the establishment of a Mega Housing Estate intended to serve residents across the state.
He noted that the various programmes and projects being executed by the ministry align with the People’s Charter of Needs policy thrust of the present administration and are designed to promote world-class land management practices in Ebonyi State.
Dr Nwobasi further announced that the ministry is installing an automated land administration system to enhance the management of land and survey operations statewide.
