February 16, (THEWILL) – Wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has called on federal lawmakers in the state to follow the example of Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi in improving the lives of the less privileged.
She made the appeal while inaugurating houses built by the senator for widows in Ebonyi North Senatorial District.
The fully furnished three-bedroom apartments were handed over to the beneficiaries, each receiving a N500,000 grant from the senator.
Among the beneficiaries were Mrs. Nnenna Adoke of Ndigwe Igbeagu in Izzi Local Government Area and Mrs. Patricia Ben Nwofoke of Adam Village, Ndiuruku Amegu in Abakaliki Local Government Area.
Mrs. Nwifuru also inaugurated an 8,000-litre motorized borehole at Ndunkwegu Primary School, Enyibuchiri Amegu, Abakaliki, constructed by the senator, who serves as the Senate Deputy Chief Whip.
Commending the senator for his efforts, the governor’s wife noted that he had lightened her burden by supporting widows and prayed for God’s blessings upon him.
She congratulated the beneficiaries, emphasizing that the senator’s projects reflected his commitment to the welfare of his constituents.
She urged other lawmakers in the state to adopt similar initiatives to uplift their communities, stating that the senator’s actions demonstrated that the federal government was delivering dividends of democracy.
As part of the occasion, the First Lady also marked Valentine’s Day by reaching out to the less privileged in the state capital.
Speaking at the event, Senator Nwebonyi explained that the beneficiaries were selected based on their dire living conditions, with some nominated by the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese.
He expressed gratitude to Mrs. Nwifuru for inaugurating the projects despite her busy schedule and pledged to continue assisting the less privileged.
He recalled that his commitment to building houses for the poor began before his political career, dating back to his time as a legal practitioner.
On the borehole projects, he noted that the lack of potable water remained a major challenge in Ebonyi North Senatorial District, which prompted him to embark on water supply initiatives to alleviate the hardship faced by residents.
