October 08, (THEWILL) — Ecobank Nigeria has unveiled an upgraded version of its mobile banking application, introducing new digital features aimed at delivering faster transactions, stronger security, and wider financial inclusion for customers across the country.
The redesigned app, available on both Google Play and Apple Store, integrates improved facial recognition, cardless onboarding, and real-time account management tools — part of the bank’s strategy to enhance convenience and security as more customers migrate to digital channels.
The latest upgrade allows users to open or reactivate dormant accounts without visiting a branch, manage their debit and credit cards end-to-end — including activation, PIN reset, and blocking — and perform instant transfers, bill payments, and airtime purchases from a single dashboard.
It also supports QR code payments and displays live foreign-exchange rates, enabling customers to make more informed decisions on cross-border transactions. The interface has been redesigned for speed and simplicity, reflecting growing user demand for efficient self-service banking.
Ecobank said the upgrade forms part of its ongoing digital transformation agenda and its broader goal of expanding access to financial services. With Nigeria’s fintech adoption accelerating, mobile banking apps are becoming the primary gateway for customers — especially in semi-urban areas where physical branches are limited.
By enabling cardless onboarding and facial verification, the bank expects to reach more first-time users and reduce onboarding friction for individuals with limited documentation.
The move underscores intensifying competition among Nigeria’s top-tier lenders, all racing to enhance their mobile channels amid evolving consumer preferences and tighter margins on traditional banking services.
Banks such as Access Bank, GTCO, and UBA have recently upgraded their own digital platforms with similar biometric login and self-service tools, as institutions compete to deliver seamless customer experiences.
With new digital layers come higher security expectations. Ecobank has incorporated biometric verification and encryption protocols into the upgraded app to guard against identity theft and unauthorised transactions — a growing concern as mobile fraud attempts rise across the sector.
However, industry analysts note that maintaining consistent user education and prompt fraud resolution will remain critical to sustaining trust in mobile banking.
Ecobank’s mobile app upgrade signals a broader shift in Nigeria’s retail banking model — from branch-based interactions to fully digital ecosystems. If executed effectively, the rollout could enhance inclusion, strengthen customer loyalty, and position the bank competitively in an increasingly mobile-first market.
