December 04, (THEWILL) – The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Umoru P. Ozigi, has ordered an investigation into the death of a former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Edo State, Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, who reportedly slumped and died at a police checkpoint in Benin City.
Eboigbodin passed away on Monday while traveling with his wife along Upper Sakponba Road.
Sources disclosed that the couple was flagged down by police officers at the checkpoint, who demanded his vehicle particulars.
According to an eyewitness, a disagreement ensued after the police allegedly accused Eboigbodin of driving a stolen vehicle due to a discrepancy in his documents.
When asked to drive to the police station, Eboigbodin reportedly refused, demanding to know the exact nature of his offense.
The argument escalated, and the former labour leader, visibly agitated, suddenly collapsed. It was alleged that the police officers fled the scene, leaving Eboigbodin’s wife to rush him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu, the Edo State Police Command expressed regret over the incident and assured the public of a thorough investigation into allegations of unprofessional conduct by the officers involved.
The statement read, “The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police has received with great concern news of the death of Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Edo State, allegedly due to police unprofessional conduct.”
Ozigi also extended his condolences to the family and associates of the deceased, describing the situation as tragic.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to justice and maintaining strong partnerships with civil society and other stakeholders in the state.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incident to ascertain the facts and ensure that justice is served,” the statement added.
