Excel Electricity Distribution Company Limited

October 07, (THEWILL) — The Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc (Eko DisCo) has announced the formal registration of Excel Electricity Distribution Company Limited as its wholly owned subsidiary to manage electricity distribution operations in Lagos State.

According to the company, the move aligns with the Lagos State Government’s regulatory requirements following the enactment of the Electricity Act 2023, which devolved regulatory oversight of the power sector from the Federal Government to the states.

The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) had directed operators with activities spanning multiple states to establish separate entities for their Lagos operations.

In compliance, Eko DisCo — which currently serves customers in both Lagos and Ogun States — created Excel Electricity Distribution Limited to operate under LASERC’s jurisdiction, while remaining subject to oversight by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

In a statement on Tuesday, the company clarified that Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc has not been sold, transferred, or dissolved.

It remains duly incorporated under Nigerian law, with 60 per cent shareholding held by West Power and Gas Limited (WPG) and 40 per cent by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) on behalf of the Federal Government.

Eko DisCo assured customers that the restructuring will not disrupt service delivery. Existing customers will continue to be served by the same staff and through the same channels, even as the company transitions to its new brand identity.

“Customers will begin to notice a gradual rebranding from Eko DisCo to Excel DisCo, but billing systems and contact platforms remain unchanged,” the statement added.

With the restructuring, Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc becomes a holding company, while Excel Electricity Distribution Limited will handle electricity distribution functions within Lagos.

The company emphasized that the development is purely structural and regulatory, not indicative of a takeover or divestment.

“This change represents a regulatory and structural adjustment, not a takeover or divestment. We remain fully committed to providing reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity supply across Lagos State,” the management stated.
