January 23, (THEWILL) – Philadelphia 76ers centre Joel Embiid etched his name in the NBA record books on Monday night with a historic 70-point performance to lead his team to a 133-123 home win over the San Antonio Spurs.
The reigning league MVP was unstoppable all game long, shooting an efficient 24-of-41 from the field while knocking down 21-of-23 free throws on his way to setting a new franchise record. Embiid added 18 rebounds and 5 assists to round out a monster stat line.
“It feels good,” Embiid said after the game. “I was hot and my teammates just kept feeding me. Credit to them and the coaches for putting me in positions to dominate.”
Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama was also sensational in defeat, pouring in 33 points while showcasing the rare blend of size and skill that made him the No. 1 overall draft pick. Yet, even the 7-foot-4 phenom was no match for Embiid’s sheer determination on this night.
With the win, powered by one of the most dominant scoring displays in recent memory, the Sixers improved to 29-13 on the season. As long as Embiid continues playing at an MVP level, they will remain among the top contenders in the Eastern Conference.
