The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has identified some challenges of university education in Nigeria. These he said include University autonomy, imbroglio between government and ASUU, growth of new universities, students unrest among others.
The traditional ruler made this known after he was installed as the 6th Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar. He promised to engage the Federal Government and relevant agencies to address these challenges and also with for the growth and development of the University of Calabar.
“The imbroglio between the government and ASUU, the growth of new universities, the issue of access to University Education, students unrest, University autonomy, salary and wages issue and University infrastructure are daunting challenges confronting us.
“Against this background and with my new gab, I will engage the federal government and all relevant agencies to look into the problem.
“I have undertaken to use this opportunity to see to it that we work with the University management for its growth and development.
“Our country Nigeria, as a part of the global village is not immune to the consequences of globalization, covid-19, Climate change and other developmental challenges have all combined to open new dimension to us as a developing country.
“We shall always be mindful of these while tackling our myriad development challenges”, he said.
Speaking at the event, the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, said he hoped that the confidence reposed in the Emir would not be betrayed.
Gambari, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari, said “I trust that you will faithfully and delligently carry out the duties of your office in the University of Calabar”, he said.
Also speaking, the Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje described Ado Bayero as a round peg in a round hole and also a square peg in a square hole.
He welcomed the installation saying the University of Calabar will be the better for it.
In her earlier remà rks,Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof Florence Obi, promised to join hands with the newly installed Chancellor to take the university to a higher level.
