BEVERLY HILLS, November 09, (THEWILL) – The Department of State Security Services (SSS) has returned the international travel passports it seized from the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II a few months back, when he was still head of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The Director General of the SSS, Bassey Etang approved the return Sanusi’s passports (diplomatic and standard), which were returned him on Saturday at his palace in Kano.
Sanusi came under investigation over allegations that he abused his office after he claimed that hundreds of millions of dollars accrued from the sale of crude oil were unaccounted for. Following his highly publicized claim, which the federal government described as “reckless”, President Goodluck Jonathan ordered his suspension from office and commissioned an investigation into his tenure.
The SSS seized his passports thereafter (his diplomatic passport at the Lagos airport on his return from Niger Republic and the other at the Kano Airport when he tried to travel to France via Turkish Airline).
Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s Senior Special Assistant on Chieftaincy and Emirate Council Affairs, Alhaji Tijjani Mailafiya, confirmed the return of the documents to local national daily, Leadership.
Since his installation as Emir of Kano a few months back, Sanusi has made efforts to reconcile differences with President Jonathan. A few days ago, he paid a courtesy call on the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where both men met privately before they posed for photographs.
